Aizu Sazae Do Temple
The Aizu Sazaedo is a unique and fascinating temple located on Mount Iimori in Aizuwakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture. Here are the key details:
Architecture:
The temple stands 16.5 meters (54 feet) tall and features a distinctive hexagonal three-tiered structure.
Its official name is “Entsuu Sansoudou”, but it is commonly referred to as the Sazaedo.
Notably, the temple has a double spiral staircase that winds like the shell of a sea snail, which gives it the nickname “sea-snail temple”12.
History and Purpose:
The Sazaedo was constructed in 1796 during the Kansei era.
It was designed by Monk Ikudo (also known as Sousouji), who was the head priest of the nearby Shousouji Temple.
In the past, the temple housed 33 statues of Kannon (Buddhist bodhisattva) along its unique double-spiral ramp. Pilgrims believed that by visiting the temple, they could complete the 33 Kannon pilgrimage without crossing paths with other visitors due to the separate ascending and descending routes.
The temple’s unusual architectural style contributed to its recognition as a National Important Cultural Property in 19961.
Practical Information:
Address: 155 Hachimantakisawa, Ichimimachi, Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima 965-0003, Japan.
Opening Hours: 8:15 AM to sunset (April to December), 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (January to March).
Admission Fees: ¥400 for adults, ¥300 for high school students, and ¥200 for elementary and middle school students.
Access: It’s a 5-minute walk from the Iimoriyama-shita bus stop (take the Haikara-san or Akabee bus) or approximately 15 minutes by car from the Aizuwakamatsu IC on the Banetsu Expressway1.
The Aizu Sazaedo is not only a historical treasure but also a testament to innovative architecture. Visitors can experience the enchanting spiral staircase and immerse themselves in its rich cultural significance.

鯖湖湯(Saba Koyu) is a cherished communal bathhouse (共同浴場) located in Iizaka Onsen, Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. Let me share some fascinating details about this historical and rejuvenating establishment:
- Historical Significance:
- the name “Saba Koyu” has an intriguing origin. Legend has it that when the revered monk Saigyo Hoshi visited these hot springs, he composed a poem: “In the village where my departed loved one resides, beyond the mountains that appear like Sawako.” This poetic reference led to the name “Saba Koyu” sticking over time.
- Architectural Charm:
- The bathhouse is an architectural gem, crafted from hinoki (Japanese cypress), keyaki (zelkova), and hiba (Japanese cypress) wood.
- Inside, the bathing area features walls finished with mikage stone.
- Visitors can experience the enchanting atmosphere of this historical structure, which remains a symbol of Iizaka Onsen.
- Practical Information:
- Operating Hours: 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM (last entry at 9:40 PM). Closed on Mondays (except when Monday is a public holiday).
- Admission Fees:
- Adults (12 years and older): ¥200 per entry or ¥2,000 for a 12-ticket booklet.
- Children (1 year and older but under 12): ¥100 per entry or ¥1,000 for a 12-ticket booklet.
- Usage fees are waived for individuals with disabilities.
- Access:
- Address: 32 Yuzawa, Iizaka-machi, Fukushima City, Fukushima 960-0201, Japan.
- Approximately 5 minutes on foot (about 400 meters) from Iizaka Onsen Station (final stop on the Iizaka Line operated by Fukushima Transportation).
- Note that there is no dedicated parking lot nearby, so visitors can use the former Hori-kiri Residence parking area or the paid parking lot north of Saba Koyu12.
- Hot Spring Details:
- Spring Quality: Alkaline simple hot spring.
